Nick: do I understand that this type of session (Advance DUPR) is only for players that have DUPR rating of certain level? What is the minimal level?

Nick

Next week's schedule is the same as last week's schedule for all games. The week following is when new formats begin. The aqua category name has been changed to reflect the future changes. Do whatever you want this week.

Sara

I signed out because I thought I was busy. I’m now free tomorrow so would like to play. If anyone signs out please let me know.

Anne

I'll take a 2nd slot if one frees up

Upper-Level Updates!

Nick

This fall we tested out a new category of level within Player Lineup - Advanced 4.5+ - in an effort to better group our players into games of similar ability. The results were mixed as we ran into some confusion around who should be signing up for these games. But that's OK - it was a great experiment and we've gone back to the drawing board for another round of schedule design!

To take a step back, our scheduling goals are as follows:

- Provide a schedule that allows players to find other players of similar abilities to play with
- Recognize the sense of community Pickleball fosters, while respecting it as a competitive sport
- Allow for players with varying levels of personal intensity to find the style of play they want
- Make sure our members are finding sufficient value for their monthly investment in GMCF

With that, here are some things we can look forward to in February...

1. The Aqua colored category formerly known as Advanced 4.5+ has now become Advanced (DUPR). This designation is now used for several formats within the schedule of games that will in some way utilize the DUPR rating system.

2. The Friday Night Shootouts are back! Starting on February 9th we will run a shootout every Friday evening in an effort to give more opportunities to play DUPR rated games for the Advanced Intermediate level and higher.

3. Challenge Court - A new addition to Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. We will spell this out in more detail elsewhere, but this designated court will support those that want to log some DUPR games with the added challenge of "you win, you stay" style competition.

4. Rated Entry games on Wednesday evening. In an effort to keep access available for the upper advanced crowd, this system allows anyone to throw their name in the hat, and then we use DUPR ratings to determine who gets in for that session.

Each of these will be further explained before we arrive in February. Hopefully these changes will move us closer to the earlier stated goals of providing the right balance between the two ends of the playing spectrum - those craving fierce competition and those looking to have fun with friends. The use of DUPR as an empirical, results-based rating platform may not be your cup of tea, which is why MOST of our schedule still lives outside of this system. And for players who do like ratings, rankings, and all the other trappings of this thing we call "Sport" we hope that this helps you find your happy place!

Thanks all - stay tuned for details.

Nick

Bob - It sounds like the Challenge Court is a great fit for your needing a midday solution. You do not need a rating to participate in those, just an active DUPR account which I see that you have. So drop into a Challenge Game, record your results and you will have an initial rating.

Also note that anyone can get rated by playing a game with other established DUPR-rated players and entering those results. We have about 100 GMCF players out there with ratings so there should be plenty of opportunities for anyone to get involved.

As for your comment on what I call "upward level pressure" I have done my best to communicate what guidelines people should be using to do self-rating and find the best games for their ability level. In my opinion, the best way to manage the world of levels is through a results-based system where data is used to determine levels, not subjective observation. Thus this effort to include DUPR into the GMCF community as a helpful tool to get similar abilities grouped up playing good competitive ball.

And it's important to note that competition happens at ALL levels of sport, not just at the top level. Within our 100 DUPR-rated players we have the full spectrum of abilities represented, from 2.5 to 5.0, with 50% of those being 4.0 and lower. So although this particular round of changes is focused on the top third of our population, DUPR is a system that works for everyone, at any level.

Bob

Thanks Nick
I’ll try to find my DUPR account. Also for those of us who haven’t used the system yet, an instructional would be beneficial.

Hi Nick- It is challenging to find intermediate times to play. All full with advanced which is nice for them but what about the rest of us? Pat

Nick

Pat - Thanks for the input on Intermediate game availability. I have made some adjustments to the schedule starting next week, opening up another 4 courts-worth of Intermediate play. This puts the availability at an even level with the Advanced games. Hope that helps your ability to find more games!
